MSPA: Nepeta's Karkat Drawing by tygerbug MSPA: Nepeta's Karkat Drawing by tygerbug
I regret nothing.

[Nepeta Leijon and Karkat Vantas are the Leo and Cancer trolls from Andrew Hussie's webcomic Homestuck, at]

Inspired by an actual romance novel cover, though I don't know the title. And Kate Beaton obviously.

Bit of backstory here ... Over at MSPAchan, I ran into a particularly reprehensible troll [called Sage, I believe]. I'd never posted there before, but here was someone saying my work was obviously all traced, and really ugly, that I wasn't actually an artist, that I was a plagiarist, and that I enjoy sucking the male member, and would like to do this to certain webcomic artists. (I'm a straight male.) He even started logging in as me and saying nasty things under my name.

How sad and empty this person's life must be.

I've been known to loosely trace a body sometimes, if I'm duplicating a photo exactly, but tracing isn't a significant part of what I do, and I almost never trace faces. Even if I'm matching them to a photo afterward. [But I'll never be able to convince certain people that I'm actually an artist and not just faking this somehow.]

But anyway I drew this. It's not traced. Nepeta doesn't trace either. But it's probably not a good idea to ever look at what she's drawing.

It's hard to find this cute when it's hilarious at the same time.

Regret what? There is nothing here to regret. Excellent show, sir-or-madam.

what really disturbs me is that I think I've seen that book before and it just makes imagining this happening so much lulzier xD

Also, I guess in a way it's kinda a compliment that people accuse you of tracing. That means they think your work looks awesome.

If it helps, I never thought that you were a tracer.

Thanks. It's hard to take it as a compliment when they're saying:

"you trace everything and it still looks like shit"

I've probably done too much of the photo-inspired stuff anyway. It's been good to get back to just drawing straight out of my head. And I've been meaning to do more painterly pieces, if I can find a medium I like.

Oh :( That's a really terrible thing to say! I'm sure they're just jealous, but that must really sting. I think your art looks really pretty, and I love your style. I don't think I've seen anyone else with a style quite like it. It's both realistic and cartoony at the same time, and it gives your drawings a really fun look.

I think photos help to make one become a better artist. I haven't traced since I was in grade school, but then again I'm a pretty terrible artist. References are what helps one get the anatomy right.

Painterly pices? I don't know exactly what you mean, but I'm sure it will be great.

Sorry for writing a long message, but I wanted you to know that I really like your work, and I hope that the losers who insult your art don't get you too down on yourself :(

Thanks! I do take that kind of trolling pretty hard. I've always enjoyed drawing real people, and I've learned a lot over the years by just looking very closely at photos of faces and drawing what I see. Even when I'm drawing some character off the top of my head [like in this comic, or The Chosen Ones], it has a caricature-y look about it.

I'm inbetween cartoony and real and I think that bugs some people.

I definitely like to use reference for bodies. Anatomy is something I'm putting more time into learning. I was proud of myself for just drawing that last Nepeta pose here without reference of any kind, because it's sort of an unusual pose? That's been true of a lot of the Chosen Ones stuff ... hooray, no reference! These little secret things we take pride in.

I'm not a great painter, and I'd like to put some time into improving at t hat. I don't own a tablet or anything, though I'm good with the mouse. On the Doctor Who pieces the shading was just done working over the photo for six hours until it looked right, and without a photo I'd have been lost. To some people it still doesn't look like a human did it.

I used to spend an entire week on every Doctor Who piece, to get them all animated, doing dozens of different alternate heads for each character off the top of my head. But people think you can "push a button" and get my style I guess.

I'd like to do more pieces that really scream "handmade" or "painted" and don't look so digital, so that people sort of understand more what I'm doing.

Anyway, thanks.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. I'm not always on everyday :(

Your look does seem very caricature-y. It's a pretty cool look and not super common.

I guess it's a bit uncanny (right word?) for some people. On dA and in a lot of other art characters tend to be either drawn realistically or more cartoonishly, and you've somehow managed to combine the two looks. (which I think is pretty cool)

Knowledge of anatomy is really important in art. That Nepeta pose looks pretty nice for no reference :) I like to try to find references, but I never seem to be able to find the pose I want (and people never want to pose for me :( )

The Doctor Who pieces do look a bit more not human made, but at the same time they still have that human made quality. That sounds weird and contradictory, but that's the kind of effect your style has. It's got that kind of perfect yet imperfect real/cartoon look to it.

People do tend to think that an artist can just fart out a masterpiece. It's kind of annoying (not that I'm a great artist or anything XD). Some people are just callous.

Thanks! I'm trying to do more stuff that's just out of my head and not photo-inspired. The recent batch of Homestuck portraits [also on my Deviantart] was fun. I'm also trying to do some painting.

When I'm doing bodies, a lot of times I'll open up Poser and pose a 3D model body the way I want it, then draw what I see there. [With the Doctor Who stuff I often used modified/cleaned up 3D bodies as the actual bodies.]

I saw them on the mspa forum thing. They looked nice, and I remember liking almost all of them.

I'm generally late on commenting on dA art (if I get to comment at all) because my mspa folder has over 2000 pictures I STILL need to go through. *dies* At least most of them look very nice :D

=) Pretty easy to use 3D program, best for posing human bodies. There's a free equivalent called Daz Studio but I don't like it as much.

[It helps, in a weird way, that Poser bodies are never accurate to the way I actually want to draw bodies- they're clunky and idealized- so I can get the basic idea of the pose in my mind but still draw something originalish.]

Karkat's zodiac symbol reads as "69". >_> I dunno if that was intentional or not, but it is hilarious.

This is awesome and so cute. Nepeta would totally draw something like that. >_> She's such a loon!

Keep up the good work :D
